Ln. Olufemi Olusanya, a member of the Lions Club International, philanthropist, entrepreneur, and founder of Firstmade Foundation, has long dedicated himself to better the lot of Okunland, particularly Yagba West Local Government Area in Kogi State, North Central Nigeria. On 24th December, his foundation is organising the first-ever Egbe Mekun Marathon—a unique event designed to foster peace, friendship, tourism and youth engagement during the holiday season. In this interview with DAYO EMMANUEL, Olusanya shares the inspiration behind the marathon, the expectations, and the exciting incentives awaiting participants.

I've been deeply committed to promoting unity among our youth, and I wanted to create something new that encourages community involvement. The Egbe Mekun Marathon is an initiative to foster youth development, especially in Okunland. It's a way to bring people together and build a sense of belonging.

Safety is a priority. We've arranged medical support and established cooling stations along the route. We also have police and other security personnel stationed at key points to ensure participants feel secure.

We have substantial cash prizes, various consolation gifts, and commemorative plaques for the first, second, and third-place winners. This is our way of acknowledging their achievements and giving them something memorable to take home.

Our landscape is a great asset. It offers both a challenge and an opportunity for athletes. I believe it will not only benefit the community but also inspire young athletes to pursue sports on a global scale. It's a perfect setting for nurturing talent in sports and tourism.

FirstMadeFoundation is running this event as part of our mission to serve humanity and fulfill our social responsibility. Our objectives include providing relief to vulnerable populations, promoting education, healthcare, sports, tourism and social welfare, as well as enhancing the quality of life for marginalised groups. We're fully committed to community development and to creating opportunities for youth in Okunland.

The marathon is open to people from various local councils, communities, and secondary schools. We've launched an awareness campaign to reach potential participants from different parts of the state and beyond.

Security is a top concern, but we're fortunate to have the support of Senator Sunday Karimi, who recently saw to the establishment of a military barracks in Egbe, with over 150 soldiers stationed there. This significant step will help ensure the safety of participants and spectators during the marathon.
